For many young designers, success in their career means having beautiful, pixel-perfect UI that is clean and provides the best possible user experience. In college, this means dreaming of projects without limits and spending countless hours creating the perfect portfolio. However, once their career begins, reality hits them a bit differently. Suddenly you’re on a team with developers who can’t replicate your designs. You might have rose-colored glasses for your work that no one wants to prioritize. Or you might encounter that one stakeholder who shuts down your work before it even gets up on screen. In reality, fighting for perfection in UI design can feel very defeating.
The truth is that success in the limitations of reality can look much different than the success we dream about. The work we do is shaped by development frameworks, business strategies, and stakeholder opinions. If we want to find success in our career, it’s important for us to understand these limitations and how to navigate them. Sometimes the imperfect UI is the most successful. And sometimes our dreams require a little more navigation to reach.
